Benga On Fashion

From his humble roots in Croydon – the birthplace of dubstep – to a Masarati with a personalised number plate, we ask how switched-on musical trailblazer Benga combines all the best bits of being a DIYer and Styler – with a dash of Blinger flashiness…

Benga’s infectious charisma and passion for bass heavy beats has cemented him as one of the most in demand DJs of 2013. Part of dubstep super group Magnetic Man and a national Radio 1 DJ with ally Skream, Benga is the archetype of an electronic superstar who enjoys nothing more than a spot of shopping, a good steak and time out with his personal trainer between a hectic jet setting lifestyle.

How important is fashion and style to you?
Very. I’ve grown up watching people with gold chains, looking extravagant and that’s part of my whole thing.

Tell us about your style icons?
Kanye West, he always seems to bring something new to the table. Fashion can be quite stale and people don’t have a real reason to take risks. I guess I’m surrounded by DJs who just wear t-shirts and jeans and I’m ‘into’ fashion.

What’s your favourite clothing brand?
Burberry is my main thing; I like their macs and the Prorsum range. The Prorsum range is always epic in terms of different fit and different colours. As a brand they do most of the work for you releasing so many different pieces throughout the year. In terms of footwear, I like Christian Louboutin and Air Jordon with really skinny jeans – I go looking for the tightest jeans!

What do you to wear to smell fresh?
I wear Tobacco Brazil by Tom Ford.

What do you drive?
I like to drive a Masarati.

Do you have a personalised number plate?
100%!

The most important question, do you carry a man bag?
[Laughs] I don’t I’m afraid, but I do use a duffle bag and a backpack.

Where do you like to eat out?
Lately I’ve been to Hakkasan and had steak at Gaucho and Hawksmoor.

Outside of electronic music, what clubs are you hitting up?
In the last year I’ve really enjoyed going to The Box with my brother, the shows there are mad.

Who should we listen out for in 2013?
Disclosure – they’re going to be BIG this and next year, also Route 94.
