2020 Vision
We asked the Tribes what they see in their future, or more specifically, the year 2020. We got them talking about their hopes, fears and expectations for the next seven years across a range of topics such as education, shopping and politics – all whilst thinking about how it will impact them and the world they live in.
Technology is the biggest topic on the minds of the Tribes by a considerable distance. They’re expecting tech to continue to infiltrate every facet of our lives, with many envisioning a world where Google glasses are considered normal, understandable considering they’ve been growing up during the rise of the internet and smartphone. The Mainstream are largely pragmatic about this change, it’s on their minds, but they don’t have too many concerns. The Alternative however are a little more pessimistic, seeing tech as a double edged sword which will bring efficiency, but also have a negative impact on people’s health and job security. One thing all the tribes seem to agree on though is that we won’t be riding around in our hover cars any time soon, but they’re expecting video on demand to continue rising and believe that holograms will be all around us, maybe even on our watches.
When it comes to medicine, many can’t see too much changing, but most are hoping that a cure for cancer will have arrived by 2020. They also predict that amazing operations which are not currently everyday could become the norm such as growing new body parts!
Education is always on the minds of the Tribes, they’re mostly agreed that the cost of education will keep rising, but they’re not happy about it. Some expect a greater emphasis on vocational qualifications, especially given these rising costs. Politicians get the blame for this from the Tribes, but when it comes to politics as a wider subject, different Tribes are concerned about different things. Urbans are more likely to feel like politicians don’t care about youth, whilst the Aspirant and Alternative groups aren’t expecting anything to really change. The Leading Edge appear the most enraged at what’s happening in the world and are most likely to bring up both their concerns for the future of world politics and their worry that the Government will be tracking their every move.
On a personal level, the Tribes are mostly excited about their future careers; and although young people are often seen to be bucking tradition the majority are planning to be settled down with a spouse and children by 2020.
