All About Looks

With the increase of social media and broadcasting of skinny mini celebrities, many youngsters are feeling the pressure to fit in with society by looking how others think people should. Stereotypically it is just women that have to worry about being the ‘right’ weight and shape however, more recently men are feeling this pressure too. Should they be getting fake tans, salon treatments and a whole new wardrobe? Many feel they have too in order to be accepted by their peers.

With constant reminders of how society thinks they should look, young men have been doing everything to become ‘accepted’. Joining gyms to be the right shape and weight, shopping for new satisfactory clothing, spray tans to be the correct shade. What next? You need to be the correct height?! The increase of men’s beauty products will of course have had a massive impact, causing to feel like they have to make more of an effort.

Weight is also a massive issue with the majority of girls under the impression is that they need to be super skinny in order to be attractive. However many of the opposite sex state that they would prefer a curvier lady! This obsession leads to pressure among many of the tribes to be skinny, all for a thigh gap?!

Surely if everyone feels like they are all under the same pressure to look or act a specific way, then everyone should just get on with it and not worry about want others think. Easier said than done, I suppose.

Personally, I’m happy to go out with no make-up, in my trackies with my hair scraped back. For many this is not the case, youngsters are feeling the pressure to impress constantly and therefore must be dressed to suit ‘the norm’ at all times. I think it’s sad that people can’t leave their house without fear of being judged. On the other hand, some do not have this fear, they’re not bothered about dressing to impress.

In my opinion, current trends are becoming ridiculous; it can only be a matter of time before someone decides that guy’s trousers are getting too short! Nowadays everyone wants to stand out, but they all want to do it in the same way. Soon people will be walking around with trousers on their head just to stand out! Any one person in society cannot stand out for that long, sooner or later their new and unique style will have caught on and everyone will copy it.

Summer last year, everyone wanted to be ‘indie’ like the kids on Tumblr. Now that everyone is walking around in obey snapbacks, Nike air max’s and cameo jackets, surely indie is now mainstream, no? So we have the people who really want to stand out and then we have the people who just want to follow the crowd and fit in with the norms of society and current trends. This doesn’t really allow people to express themselves because as soon as they do, someone will end up copying it.
